Oats produced over there are mainly large-sized, as they grow in the season of long daylight in June and July. These large fields of Oats are left behind and sprayed with pesticides regularly.  Here at Ekoto we try to change these practices by only sourcing from environmentally friendly farmers, artisanal producers, and entrepreneurs with the similar goals as Ekoto. That's why we trace all our products back to each of the farms we source from. That way we ensure the best quality products from the most responsible farmers.  Belgian oats are not your regular oatmeal. Instead, these Belgian oats are also a statement for change in countries like Belgium, and West-European countries alike, were cultivating these grains has become very uncommon, either because costs are not favourable or because most of these products are imported. We try to have a broader perspective and try to focus not only on volumes and low prices but also on quality and sustainability. Ivan's oat farm (source of these oats) is in transition to becoming an organic certified farm. Shipping emissions are reduced by shipping our stock in bulk and by sourcing it from a closer region than the standard oats.   PRODUCERS  _IVAN POLLET AND THIERRY BEAUCARNE_ Ivan Pollet's farm is located near the Flemish-Walloon border in a little town called Tombrouck, just a few kilometers away from Lille and Mouscron. The farm is not only beautiful because of the organic oats being grown, but it also brings back nature into a heavily industrialized area with very limited greenery. Thierry Beaucarne is a long-time farmer of the area who rents out a piece of land to Ivan. In that way Ivan can grow his grains and still have some space to try out new varieties and trials for future products. Thierry Beaucarne is an experienced farmer that started his organic farm in Tombrouck back in the 80's. Since then he has been cultivating a range of different products for the industry, however always keeping a balance with diversity. Over the last years, he has gained a lot of knowledge in the field of farming (as you can imagine) and has been replacing each year conventional farming with organic practices. Finding machines that fit the purposes of an organic farm is very expensive, so he demonstrates his knowledge by converting his own farm machinery! Currently, the farm produces a wide range of organic certified vegetables, potatoes, and even grains and therefrom derived flour.  Ivan treats the whole farm by organic practices, but to get officially organic certified, the farm has to go through a three year transition. In this transition the farmer spends extra time and pays higher costs for three years, but cannot yet sell his produce as organic during this period. We think that these hard-working farmers, going through this tough period, are truly brave and can use some help. That is why Ekoto wants to support these farmers by giving their quality product a stage that it deserves, not in three years, but now! Ekoto is looking together with Ivan and Thierry to offer a more eco-friendly way of life, not only through specific diets but also by bringing back local and forgotten crops such as grains and oats, and all of that whilst ensuring the quality and sustainability of our grains and products alike!
