Unlike split leather taken from the dermis, full-grain leather is leather from the epidermis, the strongest part of the skin, reflecting the life of the animal. Thus, certain "defects" will be visible such as wrinkles, beauty marks, stretch marks, scars, scratches, punctures, etc. These defects are normal. Most of the time, these marks are merely cosmetic surface defects and do not affect the leather's resistance in any way. Since leather is itself a waste product of livestock farming, and out of ecological concern, we deliberately work with hides that have some of these marks. Similarly, in order to limit waste during cutting we keep certain natural defects when they are purely aesthetic. Learn more about the use of leather in our workshop: the journey of a creation. Leather and care: We collaborate with the Italian tannery Virgilio Conceria Artigliana, specializing in ecological vegetable tanning. This is full-grain calfskin leather (with the epidermis) of French, Swiss or Norwegian origin. More specifically, the part of the animal's neck known as the collar. This is the part of the skin that contains the most collagen, a protein that gives suppleness and strength to the leather. It is also a part of the skin which includes physical and natural characteristics inherent to the skin: folds or wrinkles. This leather is dyed throughout with natural pigments. A thin layer of natural resin is applied to the epidermis to enhance its patina. This tanning process is specially designed to achieve a pronounced patina over time. The friction and handling will polish the leather, which will shine more and more over time. The marks and traces of use will also be preserved and will contribute to the patina that gives this premium leather its noble character. The patina protects your leather; in general, it's a tanning process that requires little maintenance. However, like all leathers, it needs to be very lightly nourished once a month for 4 months, then twice a year (use the leather care balm provided). Unsightly marks, stains or stuck-on material can be removed with the natural rubber crepe which is used like an eraser.---In our Marseille workshop, we have chosen to work exclusively with "full grain" leather for all of our designs. Colors and patina: As you can see, this leather acquires a significant patina over time. This patina is the appearance that the leather will retain for years, throughout the product's lifespan, which we hope will be very long. Indigo blue will have a navy blue patina Turmeric yellow will have a saffron yellow patina Red will have a burgundy patina Camel will have a cognac patina Cognac will have a tawny patina Ebony will have an ebony patina Black will have a black patina Manufacturing: Each of our models is entirely handmade in our Marseille workshop by Valérie, craftswoman and founder of Faméthic. Possessing traditional know-how that has made the reputation of high-end French leather goods, Faméthic has held the artisan d'art label since 2014. This means that all stages of design and manufacturing are carried out in the workshop based in the city centre of Marseille itself, without using subcontracting. No machine replaces the work of the craftsman; all stages from pattern design to sewing, including cutting, drilling, fitting metal accessories and assembly, are carried out in the main workshop, in the same place. As a truly independent brand, we work without intermediaries to offer original designs at a fair and controlled price. We specialize in the main type of sewing, in particular the strongest type, saddle stitching. In order to include our pieces in a sustainable life cycle, the founder has developed a drilling technique specific to Faméthic, allowing for easy repair of seams - provided that the leather is regularly maintained. We work with quality full-grain leathers and use hand-sewing techniques to offer sturdy bags that truly last, with seams that can be repaired if worn (unlike machine sewing). This does not give rise to any contractual guarantee from Faméthic, just be aware that well-maintained leather lasts three times longer and makes repairing seams easier.---Manufacturing lead time to order: 4 weeks.
