Every Aachener is familiar with Klenkes: the outstretched little finger of the right hand represents a sign of identification and a greeting among Aacheners. The gesture came about as a result of the cloth industry, which was based in Aachen and was therefore of course also closely linked to needles. The little finger was used to sort out defective needles on the machines. However, the stretched out little finger has completely different meanings internationally: Coming from the USA, it is hooked in to seal a promise.
