In the 1920s, Louis HUBERT started selling seeds as a street vendor, selling to farmers and private individuals. The first year he ordered 25 kg of beet seeds, to sell more than 20 tonnes a few years later! He rented the restaurant room in the village of Lichtenberg in winter to prepare orders and package them by hand in small bags.
In 1944 the restaurant was bombed and burned down, so it was necessary to move into wooden huts while waiting to build a permanent structure in the 1950s and to buy the first automatic packaging machines of the time.
After the war, the need for seeds was great and the company adapted by becoming a wholesaler. Georges ZWIEBEL and Marie-Thérèse HUBERT (Louis's daughter) took over the business, opening it to a clientele of grocery stores and convenience stores.
In 1983, Christiane ZWIEBEL and her husband Gérard NIEDERST took over. With the development of medium and large food stores, they have turned to self-service retail and have been listed in national centers. This allowed the company to grow and increase its staff. The evolution of the commercial landscape, with the proliferation of large supermarkets and the gradual disappearance of village grocery stores, required us to stand out, in particular by offering varieties adapted to the climate of our region and increasing the number of references in the catalog.
It was in 2011, after 20 years of experience within the family business, that the son, Jean-Philippe NIEDERST, took over the torch.
Today, Graines Hubert offers:
A catalog of over 500 products (vegetable and flower seeds, Mairol professional fertilizers, etc.)
15 employees and around ten seasonal workers, all from the region, as the company has always made it a point of honor to hire regional talent and maintain its packaging facility in Lichtenberg!
