Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) and German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), also known as German chamomile, are two plants in the same botanical family (Asteraceae), but they have notable differences in botany, smell, and traditional uses. Roman chamomile is a low-growing, clump-forming perennial plant grown primarily in Western Europe. It produces a pale yellow essential oil with a sweet, floral and slightly fruity fragrance. Its main compounds, such as esters (angelates), make it an oil prized for its properties. In contrast, German chamomile is a more slender annual plant, growing wild in Central Europe. It is distinguished by its intense blue essential oil, thanks to chamazulene, and its more herbaceous and powerful aroma. The essential oils from these plants have specific uses. Roman chamomile essential oil is preferred for creating an atmosphere conducive to relaxation. German chamomile essential oil is better known for skin care or targeted preparations.
