Cologne Cathedral (Dom St. Peter and Maria) is a Gothic cathedral in the centre of the German city of Cologne. It is the main church of the Archdiocese of Cologne. In addition, it is the largest cathedral in Germany and also one of the largest in all of Europe. Construction began on August 15, 1248 and was halted in the 15th century. It was not until centuries later, in 1824, that construction resumed based on the original designs. The cathedral, including its characteristic towers, was finally completed in 1880 in neo-Gothic style. Only the lowest part of the western tower still dates from the 13th century. The cathedral is built in the form of a cruciform church and, including the nave and towers, is 144.58 metres long and 86.25 metres wide. The building has a remarkable inventory, including several stained glass windows dating from the 14th and 16th centuries.
