This is called the palm grip.   Fine motor skills from 2 years old The child still uses all 5 fingers but now his index finger and thumb are down and he can control the pen better Fine motor skills from 3 years old The child begins to hold his pen with 4 fingers (quadripod grip) Fine motor skills from 4 years old The child holds the pen with 3 fingers (tripod grip) which means that the child pinches the pen with the thumb and index finger while the pen rests on the middle finger joint.
