Part of the summer uniform of state sailors in the mid-19th century, this hat is used by boaters, that is, sailors who board the boats of ships. Hence its name. This hat became popular as a result of the fashion which saw all the children of good society dressed as little sailors at the end of the 19th century. It is appreciated by cyclists and sportsmen in general. First worn by men, women end up adopting it. The boater is almost never worn by athletes during their exercises, but much more by spectators. It is therefore the first sportswear. The boater hat is Gabrielle Chanel's emblematic hat. She wore it very early in reaction to the headgear so garnished by women in her time. It became particularly famous in the 20th century when music hall stars like Maurice Chevalier or Fred Astaire took it over. Maurice Chevalier distinguished himself in 1962 in a song: Le Twist du canotier, recorded with the French rock group Les Chaussettes noirs. The capital of boater manufacturing is Caussade. It is of course there that Le Chic Français manufactures its pretty boaters, in a family workshop founded in 1854. These hats are made using old and rare equipment: specific sewing machines for sewing straw dating from the beginning of the 20th century, aluminum forms from the 1950s and presses. In addition, the company perpetuates traditional manufacturing processes. The hot forming of the hats, the braiding, the dyeing of the straw, which is very little practiced by other manufacturers, and the sewing are done manually. For this ancestral know-how, the workshop founded in 1854 by André Rey and still belonging to the same family, benefits from the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” label. The Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) label is a mark of recognition by the State set up to distinguish French companies with excellent craftsmanship and industrial know-how.
