Its common name is rooïbos which means red bush in Afrikaans because of its reddish stems and the orange-red color that its leaves take on when they oxidize. 

It is a plant which does not contain theine and which, on the other hand, is rich in tannins like tea. 

It has thus been associated with the world of tea and not herbal tea because of its spicy and woody taste and its coppery color, close to black tea. 

It is also traditionally consumed with a splash of milk and sometimes sweetened locally.   Its domestication is recent, dating only from the 1930s. 

It was a Russian, Benjamin Ginsberg, from a large family of tea importers, settled in the Cape region, who discovered this plant which then grew in the wild and was picked and consumed by the local population as an infusion. . 

Its infusion being very sweet and aromatic, it quickly became very successful.
