The Corderie Royal de Rochefort was once a place of production of ropes for warships of the French Navy. Built in 1666 under the orders of Louis XIV, it became the largest rope factory in the world and was considered one of the marvels of 18th century industry. This impressive building has survived the centuries and today constitutes a remarkable industrial heritage, witness to the naval history of France. As for the town of Rochefort, it was founded in the 17th century by Colbert, minister of Louis XIV, to install the royal navy there. The town was thus destined to become one of France's main military ports, and the Corderie Royale played a central role there in the production of ropes. Today, the town of Rochefort is a popular tourist destination, with its well-preserved historic architecture, museums, and of course, the royal rope factory which attracts visitors from all over the world.
