For one summer afternoon, Angelin Preljocaj and Annick Menardo met in Paris to discuss their respective artistic practices and approaches. A fleeting tête-à-tête between two creative virtuosos. “When I saw Swan Lake by Angelin Preljocaj at the Palais de Chaillot last June, I immediately wanted to transcribe the atmosphere with a rather figurative note, a smell rather than a perfume. The skyscrapers in the setting inspired a very urban atmosphere, and I started from the idea that one might have of the lake if it were in New York. An overdose of ozone molecules suggests fresh water, so chlorinated that it becomes hard, but also the ozone layer under attack. Facets of mothballs and petroleum create an industrial look, reinforced by the cold, metallic bite of aldehydes; the tar is reminiscent of oiled birds. This very dark character, evocative of an ecological catastrophe, is nevertheless softened with a note of hope: I used eucalyptus, mint, pine for their fresh and aromatic nuances, which bring a beneficial and more optimistic naturalness. »
