The Carolina Reaper pepper is the result of a cross between Habanero and Bhut Jolokia peppers undertaken by a passionate horticulturist: Ed Currie. Also called the "North Carolina Reaper" or "Gringo Killer", its strength can reach over 2 million SHU (Scoville units). In comparison, the already hefty Habanero pepper can reach 325,000 SHU, a Cayenne pepper goes up to 50,000 SHU, and an Espelette pepper typically only reaches 3,000 SHU. EObviously, tolerance is specific to each person, which is why the Scoville scale cannot be the only parameter to take into account. However, this gives an idea of our limits, depending on what we are used to tolerating or not, because some will be sensitive to an Espelette pepper, while others will fully appreciate a Bhut Jolokia (almost 1 million SHU)... In any case, it is important to remember that this is not a game and that it must be consumed with great care; especially if one wishes to discover what lies beyond its spiciness. Because yes, it deserves to be known also for its flavor, and not simply for the experience of having tasted the hottest pepper in the world. Its flavor is warm and fruity. It has notes of citrus and orange. Its heat is intense and persistent, but a good dosage allows it to be controlled.
