Native to North America, this mammal is the largest of its species after the polar bear. Its dark brown coat has shades of blond, brown and black, but it is the gray ends of its hair that earned it its name (from the English "grizzled" which means grizzled). This omnivore lives alone and feeds mainly on plants (berries, roots, etc.). Nevertheless, it happens to devour fish, ants, bees or young mammals such as elk. In order to last all winter, the grizzly feeds intensively all summer long before returning to its den and starting its hibernation from November to March.
