Elastin is a fibrous protein of muscle, bone and cartilaginous tissue that confers flexibility, allowing the tissues not to tear after stretching and to recover their initial position. The properties of elastin are mainly due to the aqueous content that surrounds its structure. It has a long chain of amino acids in which there are numerous sequences with hydrophobic amino acids, separated by other sequences containing pairs of glycines and other small amino acids, such as lysine. This composition of amino acids is what gives it elastic properties, since the hydrophobic amino acids allow the arrangement in coiled structures and the lysine, the formation of helices, which are the points where two adjoining elastin molecules are linked. If it is slightly degraded, it has film-forming properties (retains the skin's natural moisture) and moisturisers. And if it is very degraded, its amino acids help prevent and combat wrinkles. In addition, it gives the skin elasticity, and combats flaccidity.
