The landscape in Gilan province lies west of the Alborz Mountains, at the foot of the Kelar Massif northwest of Tehran. All Kelardasht carpets have a dark, original color scheme that is predominantly reddish brown or dark blue. The geometric pattern shows a strong influence of the nearby Caucasus Mountains. What is particularly interesting is how carpets are knotted here. Larger carpets are often made on wooden knotting chairs that lean against the wall of the house. The knotters then sit in front of the loom and slowly work their way up.
