The rugs were originally used for sleeping because they have a higher pile for warmth. The uneven, hand-spun lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh a typical grainy surface structure. Many rugs have natural shades of cream, brown and gray. The red, yellow, green and blue colors are made with plant dyes. Most Gabbehs are plain; if motifs are shown, they are stylized patterns from the everyday life of the nomads. Goats, camels, dogs, plants and people are common motifs.
