The carpets are made by Shahsavan, a confederation of tribes from different ethnic origins living in a northwestern Iranian province near the border with Azerbaijan. These tribes, many of whom are nomadic, are known for their flat rugs made of wool and occasionally silk. The carpets are decorated with geometric patterns consisting of delicate horizontal and diagonal lines with some Caucasian elements.
