The landscape in the picture is recognizable as the Kristiania Fjord seen from Ekeberg with expressive colours and flowing lines. Its central figure is an ambiguous creature (no one is sure about its gender or features) which has become a universal symbol of anxiety and one of the most iconic images of art.
