KAMATA: Teal, Gold & Red Stripe Woven Storage Basket

Sporting gorgeous horizontal stripes of verdigris, sundial and red stripe, our KAMATA baskets are woven in three different sizes so there’s one for every corner of the home. These striped sisal baskets make for excellent home storage: fill yours with pens and pencils or make up and jewellery, slippers, gloves, scarves and rugs, toys and craft materials and knitting projects. These woven baskets also make perfect woven planters for your houseplants and are wonderful new home gifts. The craftswomen behind these stripy woven baskets all learned to weave baskets from their mothers and grandmothers, and practise their craft within a small weaving collective in rural Kenya. We visit this group as often as we can, and enjoy a strong bond with their chairlady, Madam Dorcas. Where once these weavers would make the long journey to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets at markets, The Basket Room now places regular orders with them, enabling these women to work from home.  The beauty of basket weaving is that it is portable and flexible work: these women weave here and there throughout the day and the week, around childcare and domestic duties. This work supplements incomes made from farming, which can be unpredictable in the dry seasons.
