About Liberty Leading the People Not to be confused with the French Revolution of 1789, Liberty Leading the People commemorates the July Revolution of 1830 which led to the overthrow of the reigning French monarch, King Charles X. The dramatic scene depicts a woman – the goddess of Liberty – emerging from the barricade with the flag of the French Revolution in one hand while brandishing a bayonet musket with the other as she leads the people forward over the bodies of the fallen. Delacroix did not participate in this revolution.
