Embroidery, the days of Cilaos

Embroidery The Days of Cilaos History - Techniques - Models The days of Cilaos a tradition of Reunion born from the will of a woman Angèle Mac-Auliffe (1877 – 1908) was the daughter of a doctor from Brittany, who moved to Reunion where he was assigned to the Cilaos spa establishment. Angèle is an autodidact passionate about white embroidery. Exploring different techniques such as Tenerife lace, she mixes, she purifies, invents patterns, imaginary flowers, the days of Cilaos were born... At the age of 23, she created an embroidery workshop and passed on her know-how to around twenty young girls. After her premature death, the workshop continued to grow thanks to the embroiderers she trained. Then nuns structured this workshop by training and offering work to women who wanted it. It is a magnificent story of transmission which means that, from mothers to daughters, the technique continues. The days of Cilaos are not fixed, it is a living embroidery, in perpetual evolution which corresponds to the fantasy and imagination of the women of this isolated place.
