The story of the bear press

At the beginning there is an old Korrex proof press, print format 50 x 70 cm and a magician.

"The story of the magician Fernando" - a circus fairy tale. Hand-printed and hand-bound in an edition of 500 pieces. We sell the "magician" at flea markets, because in 1978 there were no handicraft markets.

At the first booth there is an old teddy bear with an even older top hat on its head. He is holding a bell in his hand and a string runs from his arm behind the stand. We pull it, the bear rings, the people watch - the bear press is born.

Market life is tough, in Nuremberg the ringing bear is stolen from us during dismantling.

The bear press does not go under for this reason. New children's books emerge, large-format prints, postcards, stationery. And because old teddy bears were still available at the flea markets for little money at the time, there will soon be a new market bear and a rapidly growing bear family that watches us at work at home.

Finally, the first big cardboard bear finds its way into the bear press' s program.

The jumping jack becomes a model for success. In the years to come, the number of movable paper figures increased more and more until the bear press became a pure handicraft sheet workshop. Every year we hatch new jumping jacks, women and animals.

The demand is increasing.

We still manufacture the printing blocks using the linocut technique and print them out on the Korrex. The actual edition is then created in offset printing. Everywhere in Germany in the eighties arts and crafts markets opened up and the Bären press went on a journey with its "paper circus". The bear press is also finding its way into the big Christmas markets such as Cologne, Aachen and Essen and thrilling the public.

In 1998 Dirk Lampe joined Bären-Presse. He takes over the handicrafts publishing house from Steffen Mühlhäuser and Roland Adam and has been running the business successfully ever since. Production, marketing and sales move with him to Halle / Westphalia. With renewed energy he expands the distribution radius of the Bären press. The two "old gentlemen" still have the pleasant task of developing new products.

Traditionally, a new handicraft sheet appears every year. Every time we look for new motifs and unusual movement mechanics. In the meantime, the Bären press range offers everything a hobbyist's heart desires, from simple flat models to highly complex three-dimensional figures.
