Around the turn of the century from the 13th to the 14th century, the property rights in the Marken van Enschede passed into the hands of the Bishop of Utrecht when the Lords of Ottenstein and Van Solms sold their rights. This includes the main court and the grounds in the Esmarke. It is written that the transfer of rights is 'unlimited and undisputed'. In 1325 the Utrecht bishop Jan van Diest also granted Enschede the right to carry out the high courts (judgment in neck cases) under his own responsibility. Other rights have already been granted. Enschede now has full city rights.
