Original James Webb Space Telescope cufflinks in gold mirrored Plexiglas, as seen in NASA broadcasts These cufflinks are part of my new collection of pieces that pay homage to some of the coolest telescopes on the market (all of which began with my old favorite, the Lovell Telescope). They show JWST's eighteen super-shiny mirrors, supported by metal cufflinks. JWST was launched on December 25, 2021, the best Christmas gift ever! Many moons ago, before I started my PhD in astronomy, I remember attending a lecture on JWST at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh. The speaker used an overhead projector to shine a 1.32-meter-diameter hexagonal wall, the same size as each of JWST's mirrored panels. The mirrors in my cufflink version are significantly smaller (to make them portable!) -a scale of 1:3250, to be precise! Each of these cufflinks begins life on my computer. I digitally designed each of the 18 panels and other components of the cufflinks, then translated the designs into files readable by my laser cutter. This machine is the priority of my solar-powered studio, and I've spent years hacking and tweaking it to perfection. I laser cut, assembled and polished the mirror, before attaching the metal cufflink backs. I then carefully place them on a card in a Cepheid Studio branded gift box, ready to be wrapped and sent to you, their new owner! If you are purchasing these cufflinks as a gift, I can include your gift message in the package and send it directly to the recipient.
