After his troubles with the Guillian Church and his formidable inquisition, in the first volume (The Shadow of the Cross), it is now war that Jacques will have to face. While our good Thibault de Ry prepares to go to war, the innumerable army of the Ingloys, assisted by ferocious mercenaries, has laid siege to Melaux. Inside the solid ramparts Jacques finds himself involved in the defense of the city, while his belligerent companion, Brûlure, will once again cross paths with Goery, the terrible barbarian. Not far from there, the bishop, still as devious, continues his schemes and tries to take advantage of the situation.
