Mate has also become popular in the West for a number of years, mainly because it provides the same stimulant as coffee but without the uneasy feeling that comes with it. A cup of mate contains about 20mg. mateine, a substance similar to caffeine but less harmful and which can be drunk even if you are sensitive to caffeine. It can be enjoyed warm and as an iced tea, or mixed with fruit for an energy-rich summer drink. The taste is similar to strong green tea, but more spicy with notes of nuts.
