Pont-Aven is nicknamed the “City of Painters”. In the 19th century, many painters stayed there, including the famous Paul Gauguin. A posteriori, the name of Pont-Aven School was given to the group of painters of very diverse styles and inspiration who came to stay there on several occasions. Pont-Aven is also marked by the importance of its milling activity and this translates into a pretty saying “Pont-Aven, renowned city, fourteen mills, fifteen houses”.
