Plasticus maritimus

If the worst forecasts come true, in 2050 the weight of plastic in the oceans will exceed that of the fish themselves; Not surprisingly, it is estimated that some 8 million tons of this material - half of which is single-use - end up in the marine ecosystem every year. This book is a guide that presents the scientific record of this invasive species that urgently needs to be eradicated. The author and promoter of the "Plasticus maritimus" project, Ana Pêgo, grew up next to a beach, observing, learning and appreciating its biodiversity, forging the activist she has become as a beachcomber into an international network of experts who help identify the plastics that are collected in the waters and sandbanks. From microplastics less than 5 mm. that are introduced into the food chain, to the objects in which marine fauna is trapped or intoxicated by ingestion, this work warns about a rampant type of pollution that has even formed its own island in the Pacific.
