Paul Cézanne - The Bathers

The recurring theme of the bathers is clearly classically inspired and aims to represent the dream of a lost unity between man and nature, a mythical harmony that represents the feminine element as a symbol of creative energy and nature as a source of refuge from worries. The three large Bathers, on which Cézanne worked in the last years of his life from 1895 to 1906, are considered his spiritual testament. © Copyright The National Gallery, London 2021
