In his own words, Magritte was plagued by a question: How can one depict a glass of water in a painting in such a way that it is not indifferent? And after painting the dozens of glass pictures, he came up with a dialectical composition that combines two opposing relationships to water - containing it and repelling it. Magritte called this surreal painting a homage to Hegel's dialectic. ©c.H./ADAGP, Paris 2020
