René Magritte's masterpiece The Castle in the Pyrenees was commissioned by Harry Torczyner, a long-time friend of the artist. From a series of drawings suggested by Magritte, Torczyner chose the image of a large rock on which a castle sits. Torczyner added the suggestion of a sky on a clear day and a rough, dark sea, for above the dark sea rises the Rock of Hope, surmounted by a fortress, a castle. ©c.H./ADAGP, Paris 2020
