Nagao Orifu's "Awa Shijira-ori" is dyed with indigo, and also created by skills of famous artisans throughout Japan. Wa Ai is said to have brought this cultivation method to Japan from China around AD 900, after the former feudal lord Hachisuka recognized the climate of Tokushima's Yoshino River valley as suitable for growing indigo. In indigo dyeing, nutrients such as alkali and glucose are added to “Sukumo” (harvested, dried and fermented indigo leaf) and left to soak for a week. Natural dye liquid forms during this time, and deeper, brighter, and more vivid dye colors can be created the more this process is repeated.
