The dolphin is a marine mammal belonging to the order Cetacea. This excellent swimmer has lungs and can hold its breath for more than 20 minutes underwater. The blowhole, this small hole that it has on its head, allows it to renew its oxygen on the surface. It is also capable of descending to great depths. It is a very sociable animal that lives mainly in groups (from 15 individuals to several hundred depending on the species); a definite advantage for protecting itself from predators but also for hunting schools of sardines or mackerel. Dolphins emit ultrasound and use echolocation (like sonar) to orient themselves and detect the presence of obstacles or schools of fish. They love to play and often show their joy by incredible jumps over the water. Did you know that the dolphin is recognized as one of the most intelligent animals?
