The soapstone products come from Tabaka/Kenya, a place with approx. 10.000 inhabitants and approx. 25km away from Kisii. Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, gray, yellow and reddish tones, sometimes with beautiful grain. The raw material is mined on site in quarries. The carvers are independent artists who each specialize in one product area. Tools include chisels, knives, scrapers and sandpaper. The finishing touches, washing the stone, waxing and polishing are usually done by women in the family. The 100% handcrafting results in differences in shape.
