Griffonia simplicifolia is a species of dicotyledonous plant in the family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae, native to West and Central Africa. They are climbing plants that can reach up to 3 m in height, and bear green flowers that give black pods. Griffonia is particularly known for its active 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) which is a precursor of serotonin.
