Originally from South America, it has spread to Southeast Asia, where it is considered an invasive weed. Due to its rapid growth, it forms dense carpets on the water surface that block light and reduce oxygen levels, endangering aquatic life. Therefore, the plants must be removed regularly. After harvesting, the leaves are cut off and the strong stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. This creates an extremely sustainable and abundant raw material that is ideal for the production of our handmade wickerwork. ➤The Manufacturing Process: From Raw Material to Finished Basket For our Mentari baskets, the skilled artisans at our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java carefully and delicately weave the water hyacinth strands around a custom-made wooden frame that precisely defines the desired shape and size of the basket. They use long needles to weave the fibers together using cords. In total, the production of one basket takes about two to three hours. ➤Our production partners: Strictly selected according to fair trade criteria When selecting our local production partners, we attach importance to fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
