The craft has been passed down for generations, with the younger generation learning from the older generation. In order to protect the tropical ecosystem, the marble may only be mined with permission. The marble is hewn out of the rock in large blocks and then cut into flat slabs. The processing is mainly done traditionally by hand, but sometimes also using special machines. ➤Our production partners: Strictly selected according to fair trade criteria When selecting our local production partners, we attach importance to fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to finished coaster The starting material for our Mewali coasters are marble fragments that arise during the manufacture of larger marble products such as floor or worktops. With the help of special tools and a great deal of sensitivity, experienced artisans make the flat, square coasters from these fragments. The surface is then sanded and polished by hand until it has a smooth, flawless structure and the natural grain is particularly well displayed.
