Birdseye Chili (Capsicum frutescens) belongs to the paprika family. 300 years ago, Portuguese seafarers brought plants from Central America - the home of ALL chillies - to their south-east African colonies. To this day, this chilli variety in particular is commercially cultivated and exported in many Central and South African countries. There it is called Piri-piri/Pili-pili.
