These sturdy woven laundry baskets come in three handy sizes: they’re brilliant for utility storage and toy storage, and one of these woven baskets would make a lovely gift for a new home, too.  Woven in the Turkana region of Kenya from local doum palm leaf, these laundry baskets are produced by a group of artisans spread across six villages in this very arid corner of Kenya.  In 1992, a Catholic charity launched a basketry project in Turkana, to help start to integrate this marginalized corner of the country with the wider Kenyan economy.  Today, 300 women from six local villages weave baskets here as a means of income, mostly taught the craft by their own mothers and grandmothers.  In buying one of these beautifully made baskets for yourself or as a gift, you help The Basket Room keep bringing sustainable work and economic independence to these rural communities.
