Why do we want to do something different?
The majority of yoga mats today are made of fossil primary plastic (PU, TPU, PVC, TPE...).These synthetic raw materials are neither biodegradable nor are they recycled. ( Due to the molecular changes in the foaming process, they are not even theoretically recyclable). Many yoga mat brands advertise with negligible recycled content (e.g. with 1-2 PET bottles) and the mat with the highest recycled content on the market to date still uses 25% new plastic (which is usually not communicated if possible.)
Cork and natural rubber mats also pose ecological problems (monocultures, pesticides, species extinction, etc.)because there is simply too much demand. They are often harvested and processed in an extremely energy-intensive manner. With cork, for example can the 1. Harvesting only takes place after 25 years and the regrowth of the bark - in order to be able to harvest again - takes nine years. That's why we only use the minimum amount of natural rubber: a wafer-thin layer that covers the fleece core and ensures no contact with plastic skin and guarantees optimal grip.
If we don't create and use sustainable alternatives across the board, countless tons of plastic will continue to be produced every day, even if it doesn't correspond to the mindset of the yoginis.
