Earth Trilogy

Faced with the ecological crisis, we have the greatest difficulty collectively representing where we are, who we are, who are the protagonists in conflict, and, above all, what role we must play in this adventure in which we were not prepared. As always in times of deep crisis, the theater seems particularly suited to capture the upheaval in progress. What we are not capable of thinking together, we have to put on stage in front of an audience. This book brings together three texts that are the result of a singular writing process carried out for a dozen years by the director Frédérique Aït-Touati and the philosopher Bruno Latour. They borrow from stage experience, the history of science, politics, Earth sciences and anthropology, to test the ability of these disciplines to absorb the shock of the new climate regime. These texts can be read as successive steps in the discovery of a new earthly condition. Inside offers a surprising dive into the unknown surface of the Earth. Moving Earths draws the parallel between the old Earth and the new Earth which moves, by introducing the figure of Gaia. Finally, Viral draws lessons from viruses to explore the terrestrial as the entanglement of living beings. This trilogy, completed by interviews and an introduction, supports the hypothesis that the major cosmological upheaval we are currently experiencing cannot do without a new character, Earth, or Gaia, introduced on the world stage.
