"Dukunde Kawa” means “Those who love coffee”. The Dukunde Kawa cooperative, founded in 2003 in the Northern Province of Rwanda near the village of Musasa, now brings together nearly 2,000 producer members. Most are very small producers with an average of 250 or 300 coffee trees each. Dukunde Coop allows them to have their cherries processed at a central location and their earnings have almost doubled since the cooperative was founded. The cooperative has 4 washing stations and the level of precision with which they carry out the preparation methods is impressive. The cherries are all hand-picked, pulped the same day and sorted into 3 grades. The cooperative has also developed social programs to help producer families pay their children's school and medical expenses. Harvest: Cherries are harvested from March to October on small plots of land at an altitude of between 1,800 and 2,100 metres. Producers are trained in selective harvesting: only cherries that have reached perfect maturity are picked. Transportation to collection centers: by truck, bicycle or even on the head, the coffee is transported to the collection centers within 8 hours of harvesting. Sorting: sorting is carried out by the producers themselves in order to raise their awareness once again of selective harvesting. After sorting, the coffee is weighed and labeled with a “Lot Number”.
