No one can say for sure who invented the first Amaretto Sour recipe. It is known to be somewhere in the United States, in the 1970s, when Italian liqueurs had become more popular in America. At the time, it was common in bars to offer a bitter drink. When a customer asked for a whiskey sour, fashionable at the time, the bartender would simply mix the whiskey and this drink. One day a bartender wondered what it would taste like if he added amaretto or replaced the whiskey with amaretto… and so the cocktail was born.
