They are found in salt water and fresh water. When the diatoms die, they sink to the bottom of the water, where they decompose until a stable shell remains. These shells are called kieselguhr. However, kieselguhr is also a natural source of numerous minerals and trace elements, amorphous silicic acid, as well as small amounts of iron, potassium, calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus and selenium.
