Nose, the olfactory review – #01 – For an olfactory culture

The first issue of Nez tells you about smell, in all its forms, and from all angles. As an aperitif, a few portraits of people who, each in their own way, make good use of their noses on a daily basis, and a quick olfactory immersion in the world of cinema... In our Odorama notebook, you will learn, among other things, the origin of the smell of cut grass, what electronic noses are used for, the epic of Hedione, all the secrets of basil and rediscover the smells of school. . Throughout the Correspondances, you will be able to read Tom Robbins, a bit of Aragon, and an olfactory chronicle by Céline Ellena. You will have the opportunity to “see” the smells of the Opéra Garnier, and to discover how Alain Passard uses the sense of smell in his cooking. Mathilde Laurent, perfumer at Cartier, shares her vision of perfumery without taboos, vetiver reveals the underside of its origins and you will explore the perfumery of the Liberation years, as well as an imaginary boutique advising personalities of the past. A large dossier lays the foundations for a new olfactory order, a manifesto of the nose that tries to examine, through the prisms of history, science, linguistics, education, therapy, art… the keys that explain the place occupied by the sense of smell until now, and how this place is evolving. The perfume notebook will help you better understand the past, present and future of a changing industry, with the portrait of an independent perfumer, Vero Kern, a detailed analysis of current distribution in France, the family tree of an influential ancestor, Coty's Chypre as well as a mood post on green in perfumery. A critical notebook screens, among all the (very many) launches, a selection of 30 perfumes that have caught our attention in the latest releases! This retrospective of the past semester brings together the favorites of the editorial staff, supported, playful, nuanced opinions, but also a few “noses”!… Finally, a diary lists the olfactory events not to be missed: books, exhibitions or other events (increasingly numerous) related to smell or perfume.
