Native to South India, sandalwood is a tree whose main varieties in perfumery today come from Australia, New Caledonia, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Nicknamed "King of the Woods", sandalwood holds an important place in Hindu rituals where it is used for the burial of bodies, the construction of temples and the manufacture of incense sticks. Alpha-Santalol, one of its main molecules, is responsible for the therapeutic virtues attributed to it in traditional Chinese, Tibetan and Ayurvedic medicine, while Beta Santalol, a milky molecule reminiscent of madeleine and amaretto, has it made famous in perfumery.
