Travertine (Latin 'lapis tiburtinus' stone from Tibur) is the name given to more or less porous limestone of a light, mostly yellowish to brown color, which precipitates as spring lime from cold, warm or hot freshwater springs. The natural stone precipitates when the water is heated in the air, with carbon dioxide escaping, which reduces the solubility of the lime. The small cavities and holes were created by trapped plant parts during the formation of the rock. The fine pores bind the excess water in the soap and thus enable optimal storage.
