Las Salinas del Carmen are located on the east coast of Fuerteventura. Formerly known as the Salinas de Hondurilla, they were created in the 18th century. They are the first salt mines in Fuerteventura to come into operation and the only ones on the island that are still active.
In 1910, Mr. Manuel Velázquez Cabrera (Tiscamanita 1863 – Madrid 1916) modernized the salt mines and configured them as we know them today.
In 1995, the Fuerteventura Town Council launched a rehabilitation plan and due to their great historical, ethnographic, ecological and environmental value, they were declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2002.
From its origin to the present day, Fuerteventura Salinas del Carmen Salt continues to be made with the same traditional artisanal methods.
