Origin:
The textiles come directly from the former Kingdom of Cuba, today's Democratic Republic of the Congo. SHOOWA is a small tribe that produces the beautiful textiles by hand.
Use:
The textiles had different uses. For example as currency, status symbol and decoration. They were also worn by kings during ceremonies.
Material:
The raffia palm grows in abundance on the banks of the Sankuru River. Men dry and weave the leaves and women embroider creative designs onto the textiles. Everything is entirely handmade, using only materials that the villagers find in their area. The colors are made with "twool", consisting of vegetable and mineral dyes.
SHOOWA today:
The textiles are still made today. Ethnographic pieces are exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide and are coveted by collectors. SHOOWA tries to find a market for the textiles so that the impressive craft can continue.
