They therefore smell and feel wonderfully natural. Water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows on rivers and lakes. It actually comes from South America, but was also introduced into Southeast Asia. There it is considered a weed because it reproduces incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen causes all life underwater to die, which is why the plants must be removed regularly. To prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days.
